Do you feel like you have way too much on your plate and cannot seem to climb the mountain you’ve created? How do you regain a sense of ease and flow when all you want to do is to run away and hide?
Juggling work, family, and personal needs seems to be a mythical balance that we are all searching to achieve. Maybe we need to know that we can’t do it all and have a different perspective.
Here are six techniques to help you relax from a state of overwhelming anxiety and create a less stressful lifestyle for yourself:
Take a deep breath. Step away from whatever is making you stressed. Take a walk or look out the window. Tell yourself, “Everything’s going to be okay.”
It’s only temporary. The insurmountable feeling you have will pass. We all have those days. You got this.
Prioritize and say no. What’s the most important thing you have to do by the end of the day? Start with that. Then write down the next two most urgent matters and just focus on those for now. You will waste more time by thinking about how you will finish everything so stop waffling and dive in!
Give up control. Know that you cannot do everything. Everyone has a set number of hours they can dedicate to “doing” in a day so tackle those top three important tasks and work your way down the list till it’s time to switch off and have dinner.
Ask for help. Whatever you can delegate or outsource to lighten your load, do it. Think hard about what you do best and focus on them. Be it at work or at home, try handing off tasks you are less skillful and give them to others.
Create boundaries. You make the rules in your life and you owe it to yourself to carve time out. Feeling overwhelmed comes from not getting a break to re-group days on end. Find your thing. It could be reading the news with a cup of warm tea or enjoying your hot shower for an extra moment while spacing out.
Carve out that time to calm your mind, relax, and then jump back into your to-do list. Feeling too busy also comes from over-committing and fear of missing out. Remember there is a time and place for everything and sometimes you just need a quiet weekend to help reset the pace.
