What Is FORTIGEL?
FORTIGEL is a specific bioactive collagen peptide manufactured by GELITA, a company that produces collagen ingredients for the food and supplement industry. It's made by breaking down collagen, most often from cattle hide or bone, into much smaller peptide fragments through a controlled enzymatic process. The result is a fine powder that's studied specifically for supporting cartilage, the connective tissue that cushions your joints.
FORTIGEL isn't a general term for "collagen." It's a named, standardized ingredient with a consistent peptide profile, which is what allows it to be studied in clinical trials in the first place. That's also why you'll see the registered trademark symbol every time it's used correctly.
Where Does FORTIGEL Come From?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, and it's also abundant in animal hide, bone and connective tissue, which is where commercial collagen ingredients are sourced. To turn that raw collagen into something the body can actually use, manufacturers use enzymes to break the long collagen protein chains into much shorter pieces called peptides.
This process, called hydrolysis, is what separates a collagen peptide like FORTIGEL from the whole, unprocessed collagen you'd get from bone broth or gelatin. Hydrolysis is also what makes FORTIGEL soluble and easy to mix into a drink, versus gelatin, which sets into a gel.
Is FORTIGEL a Dipeptide, a Peptide or Something Else?
It’s one of the most common questions we hear, which is to be expected given how casually the terms get thrown around. Technically, FORTIGEL is a precision peptide blend, meaning it consists of short chains of amino acids rather than a single molecule. Rather than one isolated peptide, it delivers a specific mixture of bioactive peptides of varying lengths tailored for targeted joint support.
Within that mixture, though, dipeptides matter a lot. Collagen has an unusual amino acid structure that includes a lot of hydroxyproline, and the bond between glycine and hydroxyproline is naturally resistant to being broken down further by digestive enzymes. That means specific dipeptides, like proline-hydroxyproline, tend to survive digestion mostly intact.
Researchers have actually found these specific collagen dipeptides circulating in the bloodstream after people ate a collagen hydrolysate, confirming that at least part of what you swallow reaches circulation in a usable, intact form rather than being fully broken down into individual amino acids first [1].
Earlier animal research also traced radiolabeled collagen hydrolysate to cartilage tissue specifically, which is part of why collagen peptides are studied for joint support in the first place [2].
So the honest, short answer: FORTIGEL is a collagen peptide, and part of what makes it work is that it contains specific dipeptides that survive digestion well enough to reach circulation intact.
How Does FORTIGEL Work?
Cartilage relies on cells called chondrocytes to keep producing the collagen and other building blocks that make up healthy cartilage tissue. As we get older, or with repeated joint stress from activity, that production can slow down.
Laboratory research on cartilage cells found that when they were cultured with degraded collagen fragments similar to what's found in a collagen hydrolysate, the cells increased their own production of type II collagen, the specific collagen type found in cartilage.[3]
The proposed idea is that these small peptide fragments act as a signal to chondrocytes, encouraging them to get back to work building cartilage matrix, rather than acting as raw material the way older theories once assumed.
Who Is FORTIGEL For?
FORTIGEL has been studied specifically in adults dealing with activity-related knee and hip discomfort, both in younger physically active adults and in adults with everyday functional joint discomfort [4,5].
It's a reasonable option to consider if you're noticing joint stiffness or discomfort tied to movement, walking, stairs or exercise, rather than a diagnosed joint disease.
It's not a treatment for arthritis or other diagnosed joint conditions, and it's not meant to replace a conversation with your doctor if your joint pain is sharp, sudden or getting worse.
